The Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) receives numerous phone calls and e-mails each week from laboratories who are concerned with their compliance to private insurers' payment policies.
Over the past few years, payment policies have been adopted by several insurers for the reimbursement of MR procedures, requiring accreditation of the laboratory. Then in July 2008, the U.S. Congress passed the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA), a new law stating that by January 1, 2012, all nonhospital providers of advanced diagnostic imaging, inclusive of Nuclear Medicine, MR, CT and PET, must obtain accreditation as a condition for reimbursement. The IAC recently received recognition by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as a designated accreditation organization for MIPPA.
